Second Life

I tried out Second Life for the first time for this assignment. I personally don't see why someone would enjoy something like this, but everyone has their own tastes. It is definitely a rather large world with what seems to be an ever expanding environment. I do think it's pretty cool that you can create your own world that people can explore and try out. I just don't personally see how someone can spend extended amounts of time on this application. Maybe I haven't seen enough of it yet, but I'm not really sure how a company could use this application for profit or advertisement. Perhaps a simple billboard in the world could get people to visit your website, but beyond that I am not sure how else it could be used by a company.

Mapquest Maps

Rupp Arena

This is a map of Rupp Arena. I picked this spot because I really love Kentucky Basketball and Rupp Arena is where the magic happens. Everyone has to go to Rupp sometime to see a game to really appreciate just how awesome an atmosphere it is. Go Cats!

Commonwealth Stadium

This is Commonwealth Stadium. This is where our football team plays our home games. Even though we're not known for football like we are basketball, I still have a strong love for college football. Hopefully our program can pull itself together sometime soon. I bleed blue and will always be behind our Cats no matter the season.

Keeneland

This is the Keeneland racetrack. Keeneland is a blast and another thing that anyone visiting Lexington must do. Horse racing and Kentucky go hand in hand and it's something that nobody should miss out on. It's just an all around good time and a great way to spend a Saturday. If you attend the fall meet you can even go to Keeneland in the morning and go to a football game at Commonwealth Stadium at night.

Joe B. Hall Statue

For my Wikipedia assignment I added a paragraph to the Joe B. Hall Wikipedia page about the new statue that has been added outside the Wildcat Coal Lodge. This is the paragraph that I added, "On Tuesday, September 18th, 2012, the University of Kentucky unveiled a statue of Hall outside of the Wildcat Coal Lodge to commemorate his accomplishments at UK and his contributions toward the Wildcat Coal Lodge. The university says the bronze sculpture was produced over a period of eight months, beginning as a clay sculpture, then was cast in bronze. It was created by sculptor J. Brett Grill of Columbia, Mo." I also added the link to the news article after the paragraph and added the link under the "External Links" tab. I thought the statue was a really cool gesture to Hall and since it just happened I knew it probably wouldn't be on the Wikipedia site yet.

RSS and Blogs

Three blogs that I followed are:

Kentucky - Game and Fish
  • Something I read from this blog that I found pretty interesting was that Texas legalized using suppressors for hunting. This was done to protect hunters ears since suppressors greatly reduce the decimal at which a gun is fired. Suppressors are legal in 39 states after you have applied for the permit to own one.

The Kentucky Kernel
  •  I read that students placed American flags downtown in remembrance of September 11. Several businessmen witnessing the students place flags, actually took their lunch breaks to help set up the flags. The flags are placed at the corner of Limestone and Main Street in the grass field and the flags spell out "9 - 11."

Kentucky Wildcats - CatsIllustrated.com
  • The football team still remembers what Andrew Jackson, of the WKU Hilltoppers, said about our team last year. An ESPN camera caught Jackson shouting, "They're supposed to be SEC?" The Wildcats are ready to show that they are a better team this year.

Using RSS is a great a way to stay up to date with things that matter to you. Instead of having to click between all your favorite websites, you can simply just use RSS to see which ones have new posts, saving you lots of time. It's a much easier way to stay up to date on things that matter to you. I also really like how Google Reader gives you a preview of a new post so you can see what your missing and decide if you want to read it at that moment.

My trip to Cave Run Lake

Over the summer I took a day trip to Cave Run Lake. It is about an hour east of Lexington in the Daniel Boone National Forest. It's set in the middle of a few mountain ranges and is a great place to just get away. While I was there, my girlfriend and I walked the dogs along a few of the horse trails and creeks that cut through the woods around the lake. Afterwards we drove down to the lake and grilled out on the beach. When we had our fill of hot dogs and hamburgers we went swimming with the dogs. Our dogs love to swim and would keep swimming out to us and back to the beach. We had to hold the puppy up a few times because she was getting pretty tired but still wouldn't stop swimming with us. It was a great time and I'll definitely have many more trips to Cave Run in the future.
